Aeris, Thorpe Park, Leeds

The Outcome

Aeris at Thorpe Park in Leeds was an amazing project to watch change over time due to the materials!

Copper discolours due to a natural chemical reaction with its environment. When copper is exposed to oxygen and moisture in the air, it undergoes a process called oxidation. Over time, this oxidation forms various copper compounds on the surface, resulting in the characteristic greenish or brownish patina. This patina layer actually helps protect the underlying copper from further corrosion.

Some people appreciate the aesthetic qualities of a copper patina and choose copper cladding for its ability to develop this unique finish over time. However, if you want to maintain the bright, shiny appearance of new copper, you can apply coatings or sealants to slow down or prevent the patina formation.
